Thirty-five journalists and social communicators have applied for help
from the Program for the Protection of Journalists and Social Communicators,
and 28 cases of abuses of the fundamental rights of journalists are currently
being investigated by the Special Section of the Human Rights Unit of
the Prosecutor General's Office. In addition to these figures, corresponding
to the cases dealt with by the Program for the Protection of Journalists
and Social Communicators, national journalists groups and non-governmental
human rights organizations have collected other statistics. According
to the Freedom of the Press Foundation, 157 journalists have been killed
since 1985. This year, six have been murdered, twenty have received threats,
six have been kidnapped and five saw themselves forced to leave the country
because of their job. "Prensa Libre", the international organization,
recorded the murder of 101 journalists in Colombia since 1990, eight of
them killed in 1999 and twelve in the year 2000. For its part, Reporteros
sin Fronteras (Reporters without Borders) reports that six journalists
were murdered in 1999.
The table shows the cases of homicide, and threats made against journalists
and social communicators in the practice of their profession, that are
currently being investigated by the Special Section of the Prosecutor
General's Office.
