Bedoya-Borrero
Gerardo Bedoya-Borrero, editor the Cali newspaper El País editorial
page, was murdered in that city on March 20, 1997. An investigation is
at a preliminary stage.
Amparo
Jiménez
After being subjected to threats by telephone, journalist Amparo Jiménez-Pallares
was murdered in Valledupar, the capital of the department of Cesar, on
August 11, 1998. At the time, she was the coordinator of REDEPAZ, a civil
society organization working for peace. The Prosecutor General's Office
indicted an individual, Libardo Humberto Prada-Bayoba, for aggravated
homicide and the illegal bearing of arms. An investigation, conducted
by the criminal judge of the Valledupar Special Jurisdiction, has reached
the trial stage. There was a break-up of procedural unity in the investigation.
Nelson
Carvajal-Carvajal
Nelson Carvajal, a journalist who worked for the Sur Radio Station and
was also a teacher in his municipality, was murdered on April 16, 1998,
in Pitalito, department of Huila. The Prosecutor General's Office laid
indictment for homicide against three members of the FARC, Fernando Bermúdez-Ardila,
the alleged abettor, and Víctor-Felix Trujillo-Calderón
and Alfonso Quintero-Alvarado, alias "Harold" or "el Gordo",
alleged actual perpetrators of the crime of aggravated homicide. The case
is being conducted by the Single Criminal Court of the Neiva Special Jurisdiction.
A public hearing is pending.
Carlos
Lajud-Catalán
Carlos Lajud Catalán, a radio journalist of the capital of Atlántico,
was murdered in Barranquillla on March 19, 1993. The Human Rights Unit
of the Prosecutor General's Office launched an inquiry and ordered two
persons to be linked to the case for homicide for terrorist ends. In July
2000 a restraining order was issued against a third person. Another individual
was linked to the case and the pre-trial procedures are in progress. The
investigation has now been partially closed.
Jineth
Bedoya
On May 25, 2000, Jineth Bedoya, a journalist working on El Espectador
newspaper of Bogotá, was held by three men near the Modelo prison,
and later released near the city of Villavicencio, capital of the department
of Meta. A criminal investigation of kidnapping, threats, rape and grievous
bodily harm was assigned to the Human Rights Unit of the Prosecutor General's
Office, and is at a preliminary stage.
