ANTHOC. Colombian National
Association of Health, Integral Social Security and Complementary Services
Workers and Public Servants
Since its creation
in 1972, the ANTHOC labor union has promoted the defense of human rights,
specially the rights and guarantees of health workers.
The organization advocates recognition of public health as a fundamental
right, inherent to life, that must be provided by the State to the entire
Colombian population, precisely at a moment when the financial crisis
affects the health sector, leading to the closure of hospitals and specialized
health research institutes.
Due to the ever more frequent attacks against health personnel in the
Colombian armed conflict, the association, through its National Human
Rights and Medical Mission Committee, in charge of compiling denunciations,
has asked from all internal and international instances, including armed
conflict actors, to respect, protect and allow the free exercise of health
activities.
In order to counteract this situation, it has been developing several
activities that include the promotion of political strategies to end armed
conflict, IHL training workshops applied to the health sector, and humanitarian,
psychological and legal aid to health sector civil employees and their
families who have been victims of human rights violations.
