Kidnapping
and death of Congressman Rodrigo Turbay Cote
On 16 June, 1996,
congressman Rodrigo Turbay Cote, former president of the House of Representatives,
was kidnapped by the Farc Southern Bloc as he was campaigning for re-election
in Caquetá department. While in captivity, on 4 May 1997, Turbay
Cote was found drowned in the Caguán River.
In June 2002, a specialized judge condemned in absentia five members of
the Farc guerrilla leadership to 36 years in prison for the death and
kidnapping of Turbay, as well as to a fine equivalent to 200 monthly minimum
wages. The judge held Pedro Marín (a.k.a. Tirofijo.), Iván
Márquez, Raul Reyes, Jorge Briceño (a.k.a. Mono Jojoy.),
and Alfonso Cano responsible for the kidnapping and death of Turbay. Rodrigo
Londoño Echeverri, William Manjarrez, Marcelino Trujillo, Luis
Alberto Garcia Benítez and Jose Ezequiel Buendía were also
each condemned to 40 years of prison for the same crime
