Trade union leader Wilson Borja Díaz, the President of FENALTRASE, was the victim of an attempt against his life on December 15, 2000 in Bogotá. His bodyguards, Tomás Enrique Quiñones-Mendigaño and Giovanni Aldana, were injured, as was Mr. Borja. A woman, Mrs. María del Pilar Bolaños-González, and a man, Mr. Elmer Horacio Rueda-Daza, were killed. The United Self-Defense Groups of Colombia claimed responsibility for the attack, and said that their intention was to kidnap Mr. Borja. He was under the protection of a "hard" security scheme of the Ministry of the Interior's Protection Program, which in fact saved his life. The Prosecutor General's Office ordered six individuals, a Police captain and an Army officer among them, to be arrested and kept in preventive detention. A preliminary investigation is currently in progress.
Murder of Diego Turbay Cote and others On December 29, 2000, at a place called Puerto Pacheco, located between Puerto Rico and Doncello, department of Caquetá, seven people were murdered by alleged members of the FARC. The victims were senator Turbay Cote, Inés Cote de Turbay, Rafael Ocasiones-Lanos, Jaime Peña-Cabrera, Edwin Angarita-Alarcón, Dagoberto Samboni and Hamil Bejarano-Martínez. The Prosecutor General's Office launched a preliminary investigation into the case, and ordered a member of the FARC subversive group to be summoned for questioning.
El Salado massacre On February 18, 2000, at El Salado municipal district, municipality of Ovejas, department of Sucre, armed men allegedly linked to self-defense groups burst into the village and murdered 42 people, a child and a number of elderly people among them. The Prosecutor General's Office ordered 16 persons to be arrested and kept in preventive detention. An arrest warrant was issued against Carlos Castaño Gil, supreme leader of the self-defense groups, for his involvement in this incident. In March 2001, indictments were issued against the 16 people involved. As accomplices, they were charged with membership of vigilante groups, concurrently with aggravated homicide. One of them escaped from prison. |
